The process is similar to other concrete builds. Although it may seem simple there are many factors as mentioned above that if any are done incorrectly will result in a damaged driveway. We also need to assess any plumbing or utility lines which can be a fatal task if you are planning to do it yourself. The construction of a concrete driveway involves marking out the area where you would like the driveway to be installed. Typically we inspect land blueprints to decide if an area is safe to make the concrete and if given the green light we then commence with the excavation stage.
Making the driveway
Excavations can take a long time if done using manual labour so for bigger driveways a track mounted excavator machine is used. The marked land's topsoil is removed leaving the construction area to be levelled. We then anchor stakes and set up forms to contain the concrete that is later poured in.
Depending on the soil condition, 10- 25 cm of soil and gravel are used to fill up the base to which it is compressed.
To further strengthen the concrete we like to use steel mesh or bars to cover the area. This is one of the most crucial steps involving driveway concreting as it allows the concrete to take the heavy load of vehicles such as cars or boats without the fear of sinking or cracking.
Concrete is then poured in using wheelbarrows, skid steers, hoses and all the other equipment available for us to use. We then make the wet concrete smooth, levelled and finished off with your choice of grooving. Grooving allows the surface of the concrete to resist the chance of cracking and improve the grip.
When the desired pattern, grooves and colour of your concrete has been achieved it is left to cure. This process can take some time usually days to a few weeks and can make or break your concrete if done incorrectly. The process also involves the addition of sealants and watering of the concrete which in all improves the durability and integrity of the concrete for future use.
